Topic: Mind of a Fox

If anything has supported our approach of thinking like a fox as opposed to a hedgehog, it is the series of momentous events that have rocked global financial markets since September 2008. Virtually everything about the future is uncertain and beyond the control of individual players in the economic game (other than their own responses to the changing environment).

Isn't it therefore amazing that most of the leading business schools as well as best-selling business authors in the world still advocate the hedgehog approach of focusing on a single path into the future? Jim Collins in his book 'Good to Great' says, "for a hedgehog, anything that does not somehow relate to the hedgehog idea holds no relevance".

We would respectfully suggest that there are plenty of big picture uncertainties that are of huge relevance in figuring out the best strategy for handling the medium to long-term future. Moreover, it is precisely because CEOs of certain financial institutions have behaved like hedgehogs that these institutions have disappeared.

Topic: Breaking Down the Silos - Towards a Customer-Driven Banking Reference Model

ARIS provides a head start in documenting, analysing and improving industry-specific processes through a comprehensive toolkit of healthcare, telecoms, defence, supply chain, and IT reference models.
To date, a reference model for banking has not been offered on the ARIS platform as no such industry standard has been forthcoming. The complexity that has been created through the multitude of products and services offered through diverse channels to a wide variety of segments may account for the difficulty in creating a meaningful model that caters for all.
Southpaw Solutions has applied the latest thinking in Enterprise Business Process Management to put forward a radical approach to developing such a model solely from the point of view of the customer needs.
This Outside-In view seeks to overcome the functional silos that traditionally impede process design in many organisations and offers an opportunity to simultaneously reduce costs, increase revenues and improve customer service.
Speaker: Gavin Beckett – Solution Owner for Process Based Transformation, Southpaw

Topic: Business Excellence - Providing Process Automation and Insight using webMethods

If you’re like most of our customers, globalisation, intense competition and the commoditisation of products are forcing you to re-evaluate how you manage your organisation. Expectations are higher and budgets are tighter. You are asked to do more with less. Exploit opportunities. Be strategic. Processes are at the core of almost every business function in an organisation and if you want to achieve the expected business results, you must have the ability to optimise and adapt your processes rapidly. This can only be achieved by the right operating platform that allows you to integrate, automate, optimise and provide critical visibility at the dizzy pace of business today.

Topic: Progress made towards a new SOA-enabled BPM SDLC in Transnet Freight Rail

Over the past 2 years, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) made significant progress towards the definition and acceptance of a new IT SDLC that is based on SOA and BPM principles. We developed a customised BPM / BAM methodology, a new method of compiling a BPM / SOA functional specifications, a TFR SOA Reference Architecture, and a set of TFR-specific SOA design principles and standards. All of these artefacts were integrated into a new SOA-enabled BPM SDLC that also incorporates a number of Enterprise Architecture reviews at pre-specified gates to ensure that SOA / BPM analysis, design and development criteria were adequately met. TFR has already started using the new SDLC as basis for implementation of new BPM solutions and Business Services. We believe that consistent implementation of this SDLC will help to shorten further BPM / BAM projects’ timelines and improve the quality of deliverables. This presentation will provide a summary of the new TFR SDLC and updated BPM / BAM / SOA methodology; with a view of how to use them to ensure future effective governance and implementation.
Speaker: Jánis Myburgh, Senior Manager Business Architecture, Transet Freight Rail

Topic: Ackermans

So many enterprises sit in a position of requiring visibility and automation into key processes but are daunted by the thought of jumping into the first initiative. Our rare experience with Ackermans shows where IT constructively led business into understanding that their requirements could be met iteratively – without ever taking the ownership of the process away from business. The CIO and IT Systems Manager will share their story behind the delivery of business’ requirements which ultimately resulted in embarking on this journey with the support of business.
Speaker: Michele Lamers, GM Information Technology, Ackermans & Renee Jain, IT System's Manager, Ackermans

Topic: ARIS as part of Application Life Cycle Management

It is important to ensure a “single truth” of the information used to manage the application life cycle. If this is not achieved the chances of misalignment between business requirements, business processes and system configuration are high, resulting in solutions that do not optimally enable business
Speaker: Dina Jacobs, CEO, triVector
